. . . .

You just can’t overstate the impact of Janis Joplin.

She came along in an era when female singers were expected to sound pretty.  And she chose instead to be gritty and raw.

Janis entered an industry in which women sang songs that were more often than not written for them by men and produced by men, and she chose instead to find the personal truth at the heart of the words she sang.

Her amazing ability to communicate her feelings placed her far beyond the talents of her predecessors and contemporaries...and far beyond most male singers of the same era as well.

Janis Joplin broke down barriers that made it possible for white women to bring a realness to their performances.  She earned accolades from The Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame which named her “one of the most passionate voices in rock history.”  And Time magazine described her as “the most powerful singer to emerge from the white rock movement.”  Neither organization qualified their praise by naming her gender.  And what is most telling, in the years since Janis Joplin’s brief turn in the spotlight, there has not been a singer, male or female, who has come close to matching her talent.

Join Great Moments in Vinyl as we pay tribute to the legendary Janis Joplin.  We’ll take the stage Sunday, May 3rd at The Venue with a set of songs from throughout her career accompanied by tales of her many adventures and accomplishments.  Because when you know the stories, you hear more in the music.
