Getting a music career started isn’t easy. It took Billy Joel a few years to find his audience. But when he did, he’s never looked back.
• Starts studying piano at age 4.
• Records his first album with one of his first bands, The Hassles, in 1967.
• Signs his first recording contract as a solo artist in 1971.
• Gets signed to Columbia Records by Clive Davis, the record exec who made stars of Janis Joplin, Bruce Springsteen, Santana and Whitney Houston…among others.
• Releases Piano Man the album and “Piano Man” the song in 1974.
• Sells out his concert at Carnegie Hall the following year.
• Records Streetlife Serenade in 1975. Earns the Cashbox award for Best New Male Vocalist.
• Records Turnstiles in 1976 and launches his first tour as a headliner.
• Writes, records, and releases The Stranger in 1977. From the time of its release until 1985, The Stranger is Columbia Records’ biggest selling album.
• Since January 2014 has enjoyed a residency at Madison Square Garden, playing the 20,000+ seats there once a month.
