As the sales figures increased and Fleetwood Mac’s record company saw newfound potential in the band, they turned up the heat. 

Things were heating up on the Rumours album as Fleetwood Mac’s songwriters started exploring their feelings in the aftermath of their breakups.

The group put in long, expensive hours working on Rumours—playing songs over and over, then getting their producers to manually splice together tapes of their best parts.  That left Stevie Nicks, the one non-perfectionist in the band, with nothing to do.

Bob Welch combined these Fortean legends into one of the dreamiest and most popular FM radio hits of the pre-Lindsey and Stevie era. 

But the time she spent reflecting on her situation actually gave her a moment of inspiration.  Gazing at those “snow covered hills,” she came up with the song “Landslide.”

Fleetwood Mac may have gone bold in 1975 by opening their first album sporting a reshuffled line up with a song that featured one of the brand new members.  But when it came to choosing the first single from that album, their record company played it safe and chose a song by long time band member and familiar vocalist Christine McVie.
